How does it work?

The ‘Get Well’ programme uses relaxation and guided-imagery visualisation techniques to encourage your mind and body to work in harmony and thus return to its natural state of well-being.

As mind and body work far more in tandem than we realise, our thoughts and intentions play a much larger part in determining our health.

Let us consider the negative aspects of the ‘mind/body’ connection first; if the mind is stressed, the body is tense. It is now recognised that mental stress or ‘dis-ease’ has a negative effect on the immune system, leaving the body more open to infection. Recent studies have shown that 70% of all visits to physicians are due to stress-related disorders, while 40% of employee absenteeism and turnover is due to stress.

Research has also shown that negative emotions suppress immune function in the thymus gland. Constant stress depletes the body’s resources and the stress hormone (Cortisol) is released into the blood stream convincing the body that it’s under attack. Vitamins and minerals in the body are depleted, a person’s coping ability may be compromised and finally a person can become ill; a clear indication from the body that it’s time to slow down.

A healthy mind maintains a healthy body

Now for the good news and how the ‘Get Well’ system can work for you…

Positive emotions and thoughts create harmony in the body and mind. A positive mind focused on health and well-being gives positive messages to the unconscious mind, which is always ‘listening’ and working to protect us. Life is intended to be a positive experience, despite challenges and difficulties that may and do come along from time to time. A positive attitude and healthy approach to life can change the way we accept challenges, including recovery after a period of illness.

A person adopting a positive mind-set chooses and anticipates happiness, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action.

The ‘relaxation response’ – what is it?

In the ‘Get Well’ programme, you will learn how to evoke the ‘relaxation response’, identified in the 1970s by Harvard Medical School’s Dr Herbert Benson*. This is a state of deep rest and the polar opposite of the being stress, which floods your body with the chemicals adrenalin and noradrenalin, preparing your body for ‘fight or flight’. Of course, the ‘fight or flight’ response is necessary in true emergency situations where you must be in a state of total alertness to either fight or flee. However, on an ongoing basis, it reduces your coping powers, produces Cortisol, the stress hormone, and floods the blood stream with bad fats, which can fur up the arteries and cause coronary conditions.

The ‘relaxation response’ brings your mind and body back into balance; reducing stress hormone levels, and instead, increasing the release of endorphins, to promote the feel-good factor. As the body relaxes by shifting the mind’s focus to relaxing individual muscle groups, the mind slows its conscious thought processes and as a consequence, the heart rate slows down and blood pressure is lowered.

In addition to the beneficial physical effects, research shows that the ‘relaxation response’ also increases energy and drive, combats illness, relieves aches and pains, heightens problem-solving abilities, and boosts motivation and productivity. And, best of all, with a little practice anyone can reap these benefits.

Starting a relaxation visualisation practice

A variety of techniques helps you achieve the ‘relaxation response’ and included among those most commonly used are deep conscious breathing, repeating a mantra (a word or string of words to focus the mind) as in Transcendental Meditation, guided-imagery visualization, Yoga, and Tai Chi.

Learning the basics of these relaxation techniques is relatively easy but does take daily practice to truly harness its stress-relieving powers. We recommend setting aside at least 10 to 20 minutes a day for your relaxation practice, and that is the time required to benefit from the ‘Get Well’ system.

Getting the most out of your relaxation practice…

Firstly, set aside time in your daily schedule. The best way to start and maintain your relaxation practice is by scheduling it into your daily routine. Decide on a set time either at least once or, preferably, twice a day. You may find that it’s easier to apply if you do it first thing in the morning or last thing at night, whichever suits your lifestyle. You choose.

Some people become so relaxed they feel very sleepy, and if this happens to you, a session before you go to bed might be preferable; even if you fall asleep while listening to the programme, you will still benefit.

The body will naturally self-heal under the right conditions; and relaxation is a powerful tool for returning to wellness.

Our deepest values and beliefs cannot always be changed overnight. However, the ‘Get Well’ programme will take you through visualisation exercises and you may notice changes taking effect quicker than you can imagine:

  • Visualise constructive and beneficial situations; you are becoming well, you are being looked after…
  • Replace negative with positive feelings by re-training your mind to think positively. Thoughts must be positive in every sense and be both inspiring and reassuring, allowing you to use your imagination. Listening to the ‘Get Well’ programme guides you through this process.
  • Anticipate only positive results and situations.
  • Reinforce good and healthy thoughts with positive emotions and images, which will make you feel better.

Exercising your mind in a positive fashion may make all the difference to returning your body to its natural state of full wellness and the ‘Get Well’ programme makes this process easier. It is an excellent programme for people who may have to go into hospital for tests or operations, and many have used it with excellent results before, during and after any procedures. For best results, we recommend that you use it on a daily basis.
